Literature Text

You peer over your mange, eagerly looking over at a new exchange student. His name? Kiku Honda. Although you weren’t generally concerned with people at school (you generally ate alone at lunch) this one sparked your interest. Why, because he looks like Japan, a character from one of your favorite animes, Hetalia.

He doesn’t just look like Japan, he is Japan. Everything about him describes Japan in the quirky show: His L’s turn into R’s, he’s quiet, and he only talks to the teacher and his two friends, Feliciano and Ludwig. After doing some research, you conclude that they are Italy and Germany from Hetalia as well.

But how to approach them? As an Otaku, you aren’t really the type to strike up a conversation, especially to three boys, three really cute boys. Still… you have to know if it’s the truth.

You decide to talk to Kiku. To you, he seems the most approachable. After all, if all the rumors on the internet are true, then he’s an otaku too, and you can actually start a conversation with him about manga and anime.

You sit on a bench outside school, waiting for Kiku to arrive. You wait until he walks out of the building, and walks down the sidewalk before running after him.

“Kiku!” You shout, racing over to him. As he turns around, you can’t help but blush, he’s really cute. “Hmm? What is it, (Name)?” You hold your books tighter against your chest. This is it.

“I- I wanted to know what the homework was in English. I-I may not have written it down. Can I see your notebook?” Kiku nods. As he gets the notebook out of his backpack, your breath quickens.

“Here.” As your fingers touch, your books fall to the ground in a pile next to Kiku’s feet.

“Wow! I’m sorry!” You say, reaching down, your fingers brushing against the spine of your math book.

“N-no it’s fine.” Kiku leans down and picks up your manga, the first edition manga of Hetalia. You smile. Perfect.

Kiku’s cheeks turn red. “H-hetaria?” You smile at his quirky accent. “Yeah…Kiku, can I ask you a question?” Kiku nods.

“Uhm, uhm,” Come on (Name), just say it!

          “(Name)?”

“ARE YOU JAPAN FROM HETALIA!!” You shout out. Kiku looks over at you with confusion all over his face. You can feel your face begin to burn red. “U-u-uh I’m sorry! I d-didn’t mean-“ Kiku thrusts the manga back into your hand.

“It’s okay (Name).” He gives you a smile. You breathe out a sigh of relief. “But-“ He leans in close to you. Your blush creeps onto your ears.

“If you want the truth.” You can hear your heartbeat pound against your skin. “I really am Japan.”

You shoot back away from Kiku, your face turning a dark red. “R-really?” Kiku nods.

“Guten tag (Name).” You whirl around to see Ludwig towering over you.

“Ah! H-hey Ludwig!” You raise your hand and give him a weak wave. You can feel yourself shrink at his massive height. Ah man! Why did it have to be him?! Why did he have to be friends with Kiku? He’s scary!

“Hi (Name)!” Somehow, you can feel yourself relax at hearing Feliciano’s perky voice. “Hey Feliciano!”

Feliciano walks up to you. “So, what were you talking about with Kiku?”

“O-oh nothing! I-I just needed to see the English homework!” You quickly walk away from the trio. “Bye Kiku!”

“W-wait (Name)! Don’t you need to see the assignment?”

          “I-I just remembered it! Bye!”

“That was the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done. Well, except maybe that glue accident in Kindergarten. Poor teacher; it’s not like I meant to glue her hand to the desk!” You throw your books on the kitchen table and grab a frozen dinner from the fridge.

A minute later, you sit down at the kitchen table, and begin eating your mostly warm dinner. You hold up your manga and continue reading.

You sigh. “I wish I could fall in love like the characters in my manga,” You say, sticking a piece of food in your mouth, chewing it absentmindedly.

Now what do you do? You already knew Kiku was really Japan. It was kind of fun, actually, to stalk him and his friends at school. It kind of made you feel like a ninja. An obsessive, otaku ninja, but still, a ninja!

A knock at the door catches your attention. You stand up and go over to the door. You hesitate before saying, “Who’s there?”

“(Name)? It’s Kiku.” Your heart rate quickens. Why is he here?!

“Hang on.” You open the door to reveal Kiku, still in his school clothes, on the other side.

“What are you doing here?” You lean against the doorframe, trying to look cool. But in all honesty, you’re a nervous wreck. You try to keep the blush off your face, but it ends up coming anyway.

“I wanted to talk to you about earlier.”

“O-oh. Kiku, that thing I said about you being Japan, I didn’t mean it. I’ve watched way to much anime. It’s just, you look so much like him.”

“I know, that’s because I am him!” Your eyes widen.

“Really?” You look deep into his eyes, trying to detect a hint of a lie in them. You can’t find any.

“So… you’re not just him for a cosplay group or anything?”

“No, I really am him, I’m Japan.”

“Then why tell me? I bet there’s a rule or something saying you aren’t allowed to tell a human who you really are.”

“I’m telling you because…. Because I rike you!” You can feel your cheeks turn, yet again, red. He likes you? You, the creepy, crazy otaku girl who does nothing but watch anime and read manga? Heck, you even had a blog dedicated to anime and manga! Still, it does feel nice to know somebody out there likes you.

“Really?” Kiku nods. You stare down at your feet awkwardly. “S-so,” You hold your arms out for a hug. “Hug?” You know about Kiku’s personal space and if you wanted him to continue liking you, you know you have to respect his personal space.

Kiku nods. You smile and practically race into his arms. Thank you thank you thank you! You scream in your mind, hugging your boyfriend.

Maybe being an otaku wasn’t so bad after all.

I know all otakus aren't shy and stalkers so don't get offended!
Enjoy! Hetalia does not belong to me! :)

What if this is reality and the countries are just with non-otaku people?
